About this Event

Our latest exhibition at RIBA North, Roaming Britain: Gypsy and Traveller Homes, explores how Gypsy and Traveller communities create and shape their homes through art, stories, and poetry. Led by community voices, the exhibition challenges widespread misconceptions, highlights the continued discrimination faced by communities, and showcases the creativity, ingenuity, and resilience involved in making and sustaining home.

To celebrate the exhibition opening, we’re excited to be joined by four of the artists and campaigners commissioned for the exhibition: founder of ‘Pride of Romany’ Charmaine Abdul Karim, Romani artist Corrina Eastwood, Irish Traveller architect Darren Ward, and seventh-generation Showman, Sheldon Chadwick.

Charmaine, Corrina, Darren, and Sheldon will be joined in conversation with Lauren Alderton, exhibition curator and co-author of the recently published book, Roaming Britain. Together, speakers will discuss their creative practice and advocacy work, and reflect on questions of making home, identity, resilience and legacy that the exhibition explores.

About the event

There will be a drinks reception from 6.30pm.

At 7pm, there will be a conversation with exhibition curator Lauren Alderton, followed by a short poetry performance by Sheldon Chadwick, and chance to ask your questions.

The drinks reception and exhibition will continue until 8.30pm.

This event is limited to just 40 spaces. Don’t miss your chance to hear directly from these leading community voices and join the conversation by asking your questions.

The exhibition runs until 6 September 2026.
