River Bend Annual Historic Home Tour 2025

Join us for the 27th Annual Historic Home Tour in River Bend, one of Des Moines, Iowa's most historic and diverse neighborhoods. This year's tour will take place on Saturday, September 20th, and Sunday, September 21st, 2025, offering a unique opportunity to explore the charm and character of our community.

River Bend boasts a rich history, with many homes dating back to the 1870s. Our neighborhood is a testament to the enduring spirit of Des Moines, showcasing a vibrant mix of families and architectural styles. The Annual Historic Home Tour is the River Bend Neighborhood Association's premier fundraising event, supporting vital projects such as the Heart of Des Moines Farmers Market.

During the tour, you'll have the chance to step inside some of the district's most impressive homes and businesses. Witness the progress of ongoing renovations and restorations, and appreciate the work of renowned architects who have left their mark on our neighborhood. Whether you're a longtime visitor or a first-time guest, we invite you to immerse yourself in the history and hospitality of River Bend.

The self-guided walking tour will run from 10 AM to 4 PM on both Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. Upon arrival, please collect your tour booklet from the ticket booth located at 1535 7th Street (across from Moulton Elementary). A courtesy shuttle service will be available during the tour; however, please note that it has limited capacity and may not be able to accommodate all visitors at all times. Tour details:

• Dates: Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st
• Time: 10 AM – 4 PM on both days
• Self-guided tours will take place rain or shine

Tickets and tour booklets:

• $20 on the day of the event (available online or at 1535 7th Street)
• $15 in advance (deadline for advance purchase: September 10th)
• Route maps and tour booklets can be picked up from 10 AM – 4 PM on Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st during tour hours at the ticket booth (1535 7th Street). Early pickup is not available

Parking, transportation, and accessibility:

• Park anywhere in the neighborhood and walk between host homes, or drive between the homes and park along the street
• A limited-capacity courtesy shuttle service will be available during the tour
• Many homes are historic and may have stairs or other features that limit accessibility. Contact the River Bend Neighborhood Association for specific questions or concerns

Etiquette and guidelines:

• Host homes are private residences; respectful conduct is required at all times
• Ask permission before taking photos inside the homes
• Wear provided booties or remove shoes when entering homes
• Use restrooms noted on the tour map, not in host homes
• Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times

Amenities and experience:

• Complimentary water will be available along the tour route (limited supplies)
• Some homes will be in varying states of restoration, showcasing progress year after year
• Take your time, ask questions, and visit local businesses highlighted on the map for a complete River Bend experience
