Who were the “Revolutionary Women” of Berkeley County, who valiantly dedicated themselves to the Patriot cause during American’s fight for independence? In celebration of Women’s History Month, join the Daniel Island Historical Society and the Berkeley 250 Francis Marion Commission on Wednesday, March 11, at New Realm Brewery on Daniel Island for a special “Lunch & Learn” program spotlighting six of these courageous ladies!
Most Revolutionary era history chronicles the War for Independence, significant military figures, and their roles in the War. Berkeley County’s historical accounts are no exception and acclaimed Revolutionary heroes like Generals Francis Marion (“Swamp Fox”) and William Moultrie, both born in Berkeley County, are well-documented for their importance to the Southern Campaign. However, little is acknowledged and recorded about the women, family members, enslaved people, and others who influenced war efforts and safeguarded their families and properties during and after the grim war years.

This program unearths unknown and untold heroic stories of six women: Louisa Susannah Wells Aikman, Catherine Cordes Prioleau, Martha Laurens Ramsey, Damaris Elizabeth Moultrie, Hannah Mott Lynch Moultrie, and Mary Esther Videau Marion from Berkeley County.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn more about the amazing roles played by women of Berkeley County during the Revolutionary War and why they are worthy of having their stories told. Lunch and program, $25 per person.
Serving as guest speakers will be members of the Berkeley 250 Research Committee.
