About Retrospective-Renew:
Retrospective: Renew presents a new body of work by Roberto López López, a self-taught artist born in the mountains of western Mexico and based in Regina since 2000.
The exhibition reflects a moment of both looking back and moving forward in Roberto’s practice. It brings together recent paintings on canvas alongside selected mural works and references, offering a view into the intimate and large-scale sides of his artistic journey. His early path began with painting on clay pots for craft fairs and festivals, eventually evolving toward acrylic on canvas and public murals, where scale, movement, and spontaneity became central to his work.
Visitors are invited to experience the exhibition at their own pace. The works are arranged throughout the space to encourage wandering, pause, and return. Some pieces feel reflective and grounded, while others feel open and expansive, creating a natural rhythm across the room that mirrors the balance between past and present.
Roberto’s approach is guided by observation of how nature operates. His paintings do not aim for symmetry or precision, but for balance. Lines wander the way roots, rivers, and wind-shaped paths wander. Shapes emerge gradually, responding to what is already present rather than forcing an outcome. Colour carries memory and instinct at the same time, building slowly through movement and repetition.
Influences from his Mexican ancestry surface through form, gesture, and rhythm, appearing not as symbols to interpret, but as lived presence within the work.
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced. Each piece unfolds on its own terms, inviting viewers to slow down, observe, and experience the space between reflection and renewal.
