Join Friends of the Mississippi River for a hands-on volunteer workshop focused on removing invasive buckthorn using Critical Period Cutting—an effective, herbicide-free method for controlling mature buckthorn.
You'll learn why this technique works, how it supports healthy forests and native habitats, and then put your new skills into practice alongside fellow volunteers.
Whether you're passionate about conservation or simply looking for a meaningful way to give back, this is a great opportunity to make a lasting impact on the park while learning from restoration experts.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁
Learn about invasive buckthorn and its impact on Minnesota's woodlands.
Receive hands-on instruction from Friends of the Mississippi River staff.
Practice the Critical Period Cutting method in areas of Caponi Art Park undergoing ecological restoration.
Help improve wildlife habitat and support the park's long-term restoration efforts.
No previous experience is necessary. All training, tools, and supplies will be provided.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴
Dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
Long sleeves and long pants are recommended for protection from sun, insects, and brush.
Bring a refillable water bottle. Water will be available for refills whenever possible.
Work gloves will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽
Please work at your own pace and take breaks as needed. Staff will be available throughout the event if you have questions or need assistance.
As this workshop takes place outdoors, please be mindful of uneven terrain, changing weather conditions, and insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. We recommend checking for ticks after spending time outdoors.
The workshop will be held rain or shine. If severe weather or other unsafe conditions require a schedule change, registered participants will be notified as soon as possible.
