Resonance of Ink and Brush: Chinese Ink Painting Workshop
About this Event
In this workshop, instructor Quanzhou (Jack) Zhao draws on the classic Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting and the landscape theories of masters Huang Gongwang, Shitao, and Huang Binhong, to guide you from your first brushstroke to a finished landscape.
The morning begins with the Four Treasures of the Study (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone), where you'll learn proper brush grip, essential strokes, and the five tones of ink. You'll then practice expressive xieyi brushwork for orchid, bamboo, and plum blossom, completing your own "Four Gentlemen" painting before lunch. In the afternoon, you'll explore rocks, trees, and figures, then bring it all together in the classic composition "Solitary Angler by the Stream." The day closes with a group critique and informal exhibition of everyone's work.
All materials are provided, including a take-home art kit. No experience necessary. Instruction includes demonstrations and guided practice throughout.
Schedule: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, with a 35-minute lunch break. Please bring a bag lunch.
