From the streets of Lawrence, Massachusetts, to stages around the world, REKS has spent more than two decades establishing himself as one of independent hip-hop's most respected lyricists. Now, 25 years after the release of his groundbreaking debut album, Along Came the Chosen, REKS returns to Western Massachusetts for a special anniversary celebration honoring the music, culture, and journey that helped define his career.
Before becoming REKS, Corey Christie was a young b-boy from Lawrence, immersed in hip-hop culture as a member of the Funk Town Connection dance crew. His passion for music eventually brought him to UMass Amherst, where his artistic ambitions continued to grow. Choosing to pursue his dream, he left college to embark on a professional recording career, signing with Boston's independent Brick Records.
In 2001, REKS released Along Came the Chosen, a landmark debut that introduced his commanding lyrical style, authenticity, and unmistakable voice to the underground hip-hop community. Featuring contributions from Edo.G, J-Live, Esoteric, and a young Statik Selektah, the album helped establish REKS as a formidable talent in the independent hip-hop movement.
What followed was an extraordinary career built on artistic integrity, lyrical excellence, and an unwavering commitment to the culture. With an extensive catalog of critically acclaimed releases and collaborations with legendary producers including DJ Premier and The Alchemist, REKS has earned worldwide recognition while remaining true to his independent roots.
Now, the journey comes full circle.
Join us at De La Luz Soundstage in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as we welcome REKS back to Western Mass for an unforgettable night celebrating 25 years of Along Came the Chosen. This special performance brings together hip-hop history, hometown pride, and the timeless energy of an artist who has never compromised his craft.
Featuring special guests Dio Gin, Nickali Vocals, and Truck Julius, with DJ Rec holding down the turntables.
