Self-Evident Education and the Wildflower Alliance invite the public to a special afternoon featuring a screening of the powerful documentary short “Get a Mule, Forty Acres or So…” alongside a live recording of the podcast Remind My Soul on Saturday, November 14 from 3-5 PM at the Divine Theater at De La Luz Soundstage, 92-114 Race Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. Visit https://delaluz.org/events/the-power-of-truths for tickets. Tickets are free with an optional donation.
The event will bring together history, storytelling, film, and live music in an immersive experience exploring the legacies of Black land ownership, freedom, and cultural memory.
Hosted by filmmaker and educator Michael Lawrence-Riddell, the evening will feature a live taping of the podcast Remind My Soul with acclaimed Hip-Hop artist and educator Akrobatik. During the recording, Lawrence-Riddell and Anika Lopes, founder and Executive Director of Ancestral Bridges, will share a story from American history that Akrobatik has never heard before. DJ Trends will provide a live score for the story. Together, they will reflect on its meaning, resonance, and relevance today.
Following the conversation, Akrobatik will have just thirty minutes to compose an original verse inspired by the story and dialogue while DJ Trends composes an original instrumental — culminating in a live performance of the newly written piece before the audience. Akrobatik will be joined by singer songwriter Marcia Gomes to bring the story to life through live music.
Doors Open: 2:15 PM
Show starts: 3:00 PM
