Rain Garden Volunteer Day at Jeff Seymour Family Center
About this Event
Together we’ll be transforming a barren field into a vibrant native garden and outdoor education center. The land will be a refuge for the community; containing walking paths, resting areas, an outdoor classroom, and nature play spaces. It is also an earth-healing landscape; providing shade, water and carbon capture, and biodiversity protection. The first step in the process is to sheet-mulch the entire area, in order to prepare the soil and eradicate the weeds. We would love your help with this!
What you’ll learn: Our team will walk you through the sheet mulching process — an eco-friendly technique that removes lawns while improving soil health. You’ll see how it works and learn tips for handling different types of grass. You’ll also see how we shape the ground to create swales and capture precious rain, allowing the garden to thrive with minimal watering.
Activities include:
- Laying cardboard to smother grass
- Spreading wood chip mulch to improve the soil
- Removing invasive plants to let native plants flourish
Help Our Gardens Grow: We need plain brown cardboard (no plastic coating/tape, please) for our rain garden sites. If you have extra, feel free to bring it to the event! All cardboard sizes will work, but the larger the better. The cardboard will help us suppress weeds and build healthy soil naturally.
