Queer To Tell - OPEN MIC NIGHT!
About this Event
Queer To Tell is thrilled to hold our next OPEN MIC NIGHT on July 27th at 7:30 PM at Ginger's! Whether you want to be brave and share a story for a group of friendly, Queer strangers or just come for the vibes and maybe get a bit emotional, join us for what is sure to be an unforgettable and inspirational evening!
THIS WEEK'S THEME - "REVOLUTION"
Revolution is an integral part of the queer experience. It pulses through our collective history and shapes our personal journeys. The fight against shame, the search for acceptance, and the courageous choice to live authentically in a world that often seeks to silence us. For this show, we invite you to share a story of your own revolution, big or small. A moment of complete transformation, progression, or even regression. It could be the day you took to the streets in protest, the moment you transitioned into the person you always knew you were, or the time you stood tall against your high school bully. Whether it’s a bold call to arms or a quiet act of defiance, we want to hear about the moments that reshaped you. Like queer icon Sylvia Rivera once said, “I’m not missing a minute of this. It’s the revolution!”
OPEN MIC GUIDELINES
Storytellers can submit their interest to perform via our interest form or in a bucket we will have set up before the show.
Then, right before the show, 6 - 7 Storytellers will be drawn at random to share an autobiographical story under 7 minutes (3 pages double spaced) in accordance with the theme for the evening. Storytellers will be timed. At the 6 minute mark, our timekeeper will raise their hand to let you know your time is almost up. Then at 7 minutes, you will be cut off. These guidelines are in place in the interest of fairness for all participants and to keep the show moving.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Queer To Tell is a New York-based storytelling movement bringing together LGBTQIA+ identifying artists, activists, and storytellers to create intimate, celebratory, live shows that platform the “real-life tales” of Queer people. Since launching in June 2023 as a 3-show series for Pride Month in New York City, Queer To Tell has produced 34 shows across 4 cities (NYC, Austin, Louisville, Pittsburgh), featured 154 storytellers, as well as 13 Queer-owned businesses, and has welcomed over 1,300 audience members across all shows. Each show has a different theme that allows for 5-6 storytellers to share personal stories that often touch on the universal experiences we as a community share (coming out stories, the icons who inspired us, the clothes we chose to adorn ourselves with, etc.), the nuances of our different identities, and the experience of being human. It is our mission to create consistent, dependable cultural experiences where LGBTQIA+ folks and allied communities can come together and reinforce the sense of a strong, national community united by a common commitment to visibility and equity.
