For over 40 years, UBW has stood at the intersection of movement and social justice — cultivating artists who are powerful, culturally aware, and community-responsive. The Technique, Repertory, and Process: The Radical Act of Being summer dance intensive carries that legacy forward.

Step into a week of rigorous training, creative investigation and process, and community-centered practice with UBW. The company’s revolutionary art-making practices and methodologies intentionally validate the truth, glory, and authenticity of our histories, culture, and bodies. This summer dance intensive invites pre-professional and professional dance artists (intermediate–advanced, 18+) to uproot tools of physical investigation within an embodied laboratory, where technique, purposeful storytelling, and collective power meet.

Each day will begin with a physical practice and dance class to prepare the body for rigorous movement investigation and creative process. This week-long intensive includes:

• Somatic Awareness
• Integrative Strength Training
• Learning UBW award-winning legacy repertory, such as Batty Moves
• Movement exploration and practices rooted in UBW’s creative process methodologies, and the technique of using breath, weight, embodied call and response, and polyrhythm

DAILY SCHEDULE:

• 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM | Physical Practice & Dance Class (open to public)
• 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM | Nutritional Break (Lunch not provided by UBW)
• 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM | SESSION 1: Process, Research, Dialogue & Repertory
• 3:45 PM - 6:00 PM | SESSION 2: Process, Research, Dialogue & Repertory
