Rooted in centuries-old folk traditions, pysanky are created using a wax-resist batik technique with hot beeswax and vibrant dyes to form intricate patterns filled with symbolism and cultural meaning.
Participants will be guided step-by-step through the pysanka making process. You’ll learn how to use a traditional stylus (kistka) to apply hot beeswax onto an egg, layer colorful dyes, and build your own unique design while learning about the history, symbols, and cultural significance behind the craft.
By the end of the evening, you’ll leave with your own hand-decorated pysanka and a deeper appreciation for this powerful folk art tradition.
No experience is necessary — beginners are absolutely welcome! Laryssa will demonstrate techniques, share design inspiration, and provide individual guidance throughout the workshop.
Laryssa Czebiniak, founder of Larysanky, has been creating pysanky since childhood as part of her Ukrainian heritage. She has led workshops and demonstrations at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Ukrainian Institute of America, 92Y StreetFest, Pelham Art Center, and community events throughout the region. Her work honors both traditional pysanky designs passed down through generations and contemporary interpretations inspired by Ukrainian culture.
