📚 Topic: What's Next For The Vegan Movement? Successes And Failures In Mission Plant-based
🎤 Speaker: Ryan Bogle
Is going plant-based really the healthiest choice for everyone? Why do vegans have a reputation for being so… much? And is the vegan movement really plateauing? Every year, Veganuary sparks conversations about the vegan movement: its successes, its failures, and its future. This PubTalk will go beyond the usual conversations about the vegan movement and distinguish the political act of veganism from the adherence of a plant-based diet through conversations on marketing, pet ownership, linguistics and the UPF craze. In doing so, this talk will take a critical look at the vegan movement, what’s pushing it forward and what’s holding it back.
Ryan Bogle is an activist and academic in the vegan movement whose work challenges the mainstream narratives in the vegan movement. His research has examined the movement’s tendency for exclusivity of minorities and for anthropocentrism. Ryan has an M. Phil in Identities and Cultures of Europe from Trinity College Dublin and a BA in Sociology from the University of Cambridge. He is currently researching the relationship large corporations, both vegan and not, have with the grassroots vegan movement, exploring how corporate powers shape public discourse, policy outcomes and individual decision-making.
