Pochoir Printing: Stencil & Color gel plate art class
Advertisement
Explore the art of pochoir with Heidi Drost through layered hand cut shapes and stencil printing on the gel plate. We use simple shapes that we will cut from mylar. They are inked and carefully placed on the inked plate, where you’ll build prints with clarity, contrast, and rhythm. This process invites both control and play, allowing you to create bold or subtle compositions through layering and repetition. No drawing required—just a curiosity for shape, color, and design.
We will be working with mylar sheets and acrylics on gel plates. All materials supplied, but you may bring your own acrylic paints and gel plate if you have them.
What is Pochoir?
Pochoir is a printmaking technique that uses stencils to apply layers of color, one shape at a time. Each color is added separately, creating images that feel both intentional and expressive, with a beautiful sense of clarity and design.
The word pochoir comes from the French language, meaning “stencil.” The technique became especially popular in early 20th-century France, where artists used it to create richly colored prints and illustrations by hand—long before digital printing existed.
Students bring gloves if desired, beverage and lunch.
