About this Event

Plated in Sound — A Film Photography Exhibition

By Lisa K Cho

Born from a lifelong love of music and years spent crafting soundtracks for brands worldwide, Plated in Sound explores the spaces where music, community, and food converge — examining the people who curate the sound, the events that bring it to life, and how music shapes the places we return to.

Chapter One features Plantoem — part plant shop, part café, and one of Kaimuki's most beloved spaces. The exhibition brings to life three distinct musical experiences documented within the space: The Musician's Lounge, a jazz jam session organized by the Dae Han Experience; Wunderfish, an electronic artist who creates ambient music using plant frequencies; and a four-DJ set featuring Waxx Fanatic, Technique, Feels Deep, and Mike Mixx.

THE EXHIBITION

On display August 14th through September 13th, Plated in Sound marks the first exhibition of its kind at Plantoem — a space whose own community and story are at the heart of the work. Featuring 20+ film photographs, this is also Lisa K Cho's largest exhibition to date.

The exhibition coincides with Plantoem's 5th anniversary on August 15th — a fitting backdrop for a project rooted in the space's history and community.

Opening Night — August 14th at 7pmJoin us for an opening reception featuring an Artist Talk and live musical performances.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Honolulu, Lisa K Cho is an award-winning film photographer and music curator. Self-taught and shooting primarily on a nearly 60-year-old camera, her debut series Ballet on Film earned an award from The Photo Review's international competition, juried by Kathy Ryan and Jessica Dimson of The New York Times Magazine, and was recognized in the inaugural Documentary Photography in Hawaii exhibition, juried by PF Bentley. The series was also featured on the cover of Hana Hou! with a 12-page spread and has been exhibited in Honolulu and New York City.

Before photography, music was Lisa's first love. A USC graduate with a degree in Music Industry, she has spent over 15 years crafting soundtracks for more than 100 brands worldwide — including Lululemon, Dig Inn, Four Seasons, and Arden Waikiki. Plated in Sound brings both worlds together.
