From music to tickles, explore the science of human sensations! What connects anime, heartbeat, laughter and ancient religion?Join us for a unique edition of Pint of Science Norway: Bergen, where we bridge the gap between high-brow classical music and anime, the biological mystery of tickling, and the rhythmic sound of life itself. Let four researchers from the University of Bergen change the way you see (and hear) the world!
What’s on the menu? 🎤
🎹 Of queer bears, Bach and the Lily flower: what does anime have to do with classical music? - Matthieu Stepec (Grieg Academy, UiB)
Japanese animation has been "animefying" Western classical music since the 1960s. Matthieu explores how pop culture breathes new life and meaning into old classics, and what this intersection can teach us about high-brow European traditions.
💓 Hjertesang - Lyden av liv (Heart Song - The Sound of Life) -
Jens-Erik Aasmundseth (Grieg Academy, UiB)
The heartbeat is the first sound we ever relate to. Jens-Erik shares a moving project where digital stethoscopes are used to record patients' heartbeats, turning them into a rhythmic musical base for families to create unique, therapeutic pieces of music together.
🤣 The science of tickling - Brian Wehner (Michael Sars Centre, UiB)
Are you ticklish? Have you ever wondered why? This "emotion" has puzzled everyone from Plato to Darwin. Brian dives into our current scientific understanding of this most fascinating and peculiar sensation.
📜 Mirrors of the Heart: Ezekiel Traditions and Radical Embodied Religion - Magnus Arvid Boes Lorenzen (Dept. of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies, UiB)
What "pulls" people toward radicalization? Magnus presents research from the RADHEART project, combining history, anthropology, and evolutionary psychology to look at strong individual commitment and emotion in ancient texts and modern contexts.
