High-spirited, devout, a tad jealous and above all a true diva — that’s Floria Tosca! With her captivating voice and undeniable star qualities, she triumphs on the Roman stages, while the city groans under Baron Scarpia’s reign of terror. The corrupt chief of police is infatuated with the singer and so has two reasons to eliminate her lover Mario Cavaradossi, a sympathiser with the city’s political rebels. He offers Tosca the choice: if she gives herself to him, Mario will not be executed the next morning…
Giacomo Puccini’s hit opera is a thriller that has you by the throat from the first note to the last. In this electrifying La Monnaie production, director Rafael R. Villalobos addresses a theme that could hardly be more topical: the instrumentalization of religion as a means to political oppression. With parallels drawn between Cavaradossi and the figure of film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, Villalobos puts the spotlight on the pressure the Vatican exerted on society in Rome at the time. In the orchestra pit, Jordan de Souza unleashes all the power and intensity of Puccini’s compelling score, whose expressive vocal lines and cinematic orchestrations have made it one of the world’s favourite operas.

Capricieuse, dévote, parfois jalouse, et incontestablement diva – Floria Tosca incarne toutes ces facettes. Avec sa voix enchanteresse et son charisme éclatant, elle triomphe sur les scènes de Rome, tandis que la ville est écrasée sous le joug de son redoutable chef de police, le baron Scarpia. Transi d’amour pour la chanteuse, celui-ci nourri un double dessein : la conquérir et se débarrasser de son amant Mario Cavaradossi, acquis à la cause des insurgés. Il met alors Tosca devant un cruel dilemme : céder à ses avances, sans quoi Mario sera exécuté le lendemain à l’aube...
L’opéra emblématique de Giacomo Puccini est un véritable thriller qui captive de la première à la dernière note. Dans cette production de la Monnaie, le metteur en scène Rafael R. Villalobos aborde un sujet brûlant d’actualité : la religion comme instrument de domination politique. À travers la figure du cinéaste Pier Paolo Pasolini, il met en évidence l'influence du Vatican sur la société romaine de l’époque. Dans la fosse, Jordan de Souza libère toute la puissance et l’intensité de la partition de Puccini, dont les lignes vocales expressives et les orchestrations dignes du grand écran ont hissé cet opéra au rang des plus célèbres du répertoire.

Hij stelt Tosca voor de keuze: geeft ze zich aan hem, dan wordt Mario de volgende ochtend niet geëxecuteerd...
Giacomo Puccini’s hit-opera is een zinderende thriller die van de eerste tot de laatste noot bij de keel grijpt. Deze Muntproductie van regisseur Rafael R. Villalobos kaart een thema aan dat in het brandpunt van de actualiteit staat: de instrumentalisering van de godsdienst als een middel tot politieke overheersing.
