About this Event

Workshop Details

Watercolours follow a linear route from light to dark but painting your way through that can be fraught with questions and doubt. In this workshop you will learn how to use a greyscale image to help map your way logically through the watercolour process, giving you confidence and a shift in focus with your painting. You will be introduced to a five-value scale, and how to use it alongside a greyscale image for achieving watercolours that have direct depth and clarity.

About the Artist

Paul Talbot-Greaves RI is a professional artist who works with watercolour, oil and acrylic. His work reflects the rugged scenery of the landscape either in the context of wild places or in the nature of the Yorkshire hills where he lives.

He draws his inspiration from historical connections using layers of colour, texture, shapes and patterns applied with energy and feeling. His main inspiration is light and the effects created by the contrasts of shadows.

Paul writes articles for The Artist magazine (UK) and has four practical art books published. He has won many awards and shows regularly with the RI in London. He is represented by numerous galleries based around the North of England.

Materials Required
  • Please bring along some photo references to work from, along with greyscale versions of the same. These can be either printed or saved on an i-Pad or tablet. Try to keep the subject simple if possible, and for best results make sure it contains some light and dark.
  • My usual palette which you might use for reference consists of: Permanent sap green, viridian, cerulean blue, Winsor blue r/s, cobalt blue, ultramarine, Perylene violet, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, light red, burnt umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow pale, Winsor lemon, ivory black, opaque white (or permanent white gouache)
  • Brushes. Choose either natural hairbrushes and/or synthetics. Natural hair such as sables and squirrel mops hold lots of colour. Synthetic brushes hold less colour. It is beneficial to have a selection of one large, one or two medium sized round or mop types, a small synthetic round, and a fine rigger brush.
  • Paper. Use quality paper where possible, such as Saunders Waterford, Arches, Winsor Newton Professional or any similar cotton paper. I would recommend a piece of paper no bigger than 38 x 28cm unless you are confident in applying large washes of paint.

Other equipment

Waterpot, palette, Pencils 4B or 6B, putty rubber, cartridge pad or spare paper (for any preliminary sketches, designs, and notes), kitchen roll, masking tape, water spray, household sponge wipe (thin moppet type).

Materials Provided
  • Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:
  • Table Top Easel
  • 13 x 17 12mm Warp resistant MDF Board
  • Palette or Mixing Plate
  • Limited sundry products are also available if you forget anything.
