About this Event
We are celebrating Earth Week 2026 by showcasing OHIO Univiersities compost facility! This tour will be lead by OHIO's Director of Sustainablity, Samuel Crowl.
OHIO University has the largest known in-vessel compost system at any college or university in the nation! This class 2 facility composts food scraps from university dining halls where it is made into high quaility soil ammenement that is used on campus and is availble for sale to the public.
In-vessel compost systems support ideal conditions for food waste and organic material to breakdown by controling humidity, temperature and fresh air exchange while also limiting odors and pests! The controlled environment of an in-vessel compost system limits variablity in the decomposition process, making it the fastest process to fully compost organic waste!
Rural Action strives to promote local partnerships to educate and support our communities through connecting individuals to resources, sharing best practices and providing hands on support. Rural Action will also be partnering with the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District to host a another compost facility tour of AHSWD's class 2 forced air compost facility later this spring/ early summer (exact time TBD)! These diffrent facilities utilize diffrent techinques to be able to create high quaility soil ammenment. Keep an eye out for this tour as well to see diffrent approaches to breaking down organic waste!
