The Southeast Ohio History Center welcomes Mike Major with his presentation "From Athens to Lincoln" for our April Lyceum Lunch on April 16th from 12-1. Since graduating from Ohio University in 1971 and Pratt Institute with an MFA in 1980, marrying Jane Shick (OU ‘73), Mike has published 14 books of drawings and created over 200 bronze sculptures including two larger than life Abraham Lincoln monuments.
After graduation, he at first had no idea how to make a living as an artist. Publishing his first book, “Mike’s Book, Drawings of Athens and Ohio University” was a start. His most recent book, “Ink, Paint and Bronze, A Path to Creative Freedom”, recounts time doing creative work in Athens, New York and Urbana, Ohio.
Mike and Jane’s love for historic architecture and open space led them to the purchase and renovation of an abandoned 1877 Universalist Church building.
He will share stories about time in Athens, the church renovation and the journey that led him to national recognition as a sculptor at the Southeast Ohio History Center at noon on April 16th, 2026.
