About this Event

About the Concert Program

This program opens with a 20-minute pre-concert discussion, featuring live musical examples, on Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time and the wartime circumstances that produced it. Messiaen composed the work in 1940 while held as a prisoner of war in a German camp, where it received its first performance before an audience of fellow prisoners and guards.

The discussion and the music engage with themes of war, captivity and imprisonment, wartime hardship, and religious and apocalyptic imagery, including the visions of the end of time, drawn from the Book of Revelation from the New Testament, that give the piece its name.

About the Ensemble/Performers:

Every summer, NYO Canada brings together Canada's most talented young musicians, in their teens and twenties, for an intensive residency in Waterloo before heading out on a national tour. The big LITTLE Concert Series opens that experience to the public: nearly four weeks of free, intimate evening concerts featuring student and faculty ensembles alongside celebrated guest artists.

This year's guest lineup includes the New Orford String Quartet, the Formosa Quartet, and the Gryphon Trio with James Campbell. No prior knowledge of classical music is required, just show up and enjoy the music up close.

No tickets needed. Seating on a first come first served basis. Donations gratefully accepted to support NYO Canada's young musicians.
