Nurturing Nature on the Crosstown Trail
About this Event
This walk starts near Twin Peaks and ends near Bernal--from the Nature in the City Nursery at McAteer Farm to the new CNPS Yerba Buena Nursery at Alemany Farm. Note that this is a one-way walk with different starting and ending locations.
Walk Leaders: Amber Mahlberg and Helen Doyle
Amber Mahlberg is Executive Director of Nature in the City and has helped launch innovative, creative projects and partnerships to connect people to local nature. She leads a team of passionate nature lovers working to restore habitat, create native plant gardens, and build green schoolyards in San Francisco.
Helen Doyle, nature lover and educator, serves on Nature in the City’s advisory council and on the steering committee for Reimagining San Francisco. She also represents Nature in the City on the Crosstown Trails Coalition and is a docent at the SF Botanical Garden, Año Nuevo State Park, and Alcatraz Historic Gardens She loves to explore nature in the City with like-minded people.
Details:
We’ll start at the McAteer Campus Community Farm, home to Nature in the City’s native plant nursery, where a volunteer workday begins at 10 a.m. We’ll hear from nursery staff and thank volunteers.
Then we’ll exit the back gates and walk the Crosstown Trail through Glen Canyon & Glen Park, along the Glen Park Greenway.
Then we’ll walk through the Bernal Cut and down to Alemany Farm to help celebrate the opening of the brand new CNPS Yerba Buena native plant nursery and be part of Alemany Farm’s Harvest Fest, ~11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Preparation:
Bring a sack lunch that we’ll enjoy when we get to a good spot along the way. There will be public bathrooms with breaks at the nursery, Glen Park, and Alemany Farm.
The walk involves a bit of up-and-down walking, so be prepared with good shoes, layers, and plenty of snacks and water.
Meeting Location:
Our team will meet you at the McAteer Campus parking lot off O’Shaughnessy Blvd, just south of Portola. Please park OUTSIDE the chain-link fence. Our team will meet and direct or escort you to the nursery near the school’s track.

Transportation:
Transit options to McAteer: 36, 43, 44, 48 and 52 buses; K, M, L streetcar at Forest Hill Station (~0.5 mile away). BART at Glen Park and 14 and 32 bus near Alemany Farm.
We recommend parking in the lot OUTSIDE the lockable gates at O’Shaunessy and Portola. If you park inside the gates, staff might shut and lock them so you wouldn’t be able to get your car out.
Weather:
Heavy rain will cancel. We will email participants the morning of walk if we cancel.
Cost:
Our nature walks are free and open to the public (with RSVPs requested). We kindly suggest a donation of $20 per person or whatever amount is right for you.
Donations can be made to Nature in the City on the day of the event in cash or online.
