The magnificent Holkham Hall, the home of the Earl and Countess of Leicester, sits at the heart of a 25,000 acre estate in North Norfolk that includes parkland, agricultural land, a nature reserve, a holiday park and much more. The course takes place in the nature reserves and can include woodland, beach, and meadow, in which a variety of species can be found.
For those wishing to spend the day at Holkham, or even a few days, there is plenty on offer including access to Hall, a café, play area, rope climbing adventure, and much more.
This expansive estate offers an exceptional place to learn about edible plants and mushrooms growing in the UK. This foraging course walk is easy to reach from Norwich, Fakenham, Sandringham, King's Lynn, Cromer, Swaffham, Thetford and Great Yarmouth.
At Holkham, you will discover how to identify some commonly growing foods to forage for, how to avoid poisonous lookalikes, and hints on where to look.
When we meet up, we will go through laws and safety points of foraging before heading out to discover the wild food in the area.
The course includes (subject to Covid restrictions):
- an overview of foraging laws and safety best practice
- introduction to a number of edible species
- instruction on how to tell edible species apart from poisonous lookalikes
- information on where to find these species again
- recipe ideas
- wild food sample/s such as soup, jam, jelly, pesto, ferments, vinegar or cordial
- digital information sheet after the course
Age limit
Participants must be aged 18 years or older - no children under 18 or babes in arms allowed on this course
Dogs
Dogs are not allowed to be brought along on this course
Please note, we do not harvest species to take away on our courses.
We cannot guarantee what species will be growing on any given course date. Springtime and summer courses should be predominantly plant focused, with mushrooms sometimes found. Summer courses may also have fruits, flowers and perhaps some mushrooms to learn about. Autumn courses should have more mushrooms than springtime with sometimes a small amount of plants available.
