Remember the session of soft-skills at the National Research Software day in 2025? After talking to multiple interested stakeholders, and personally attending multiple trainings, we have selected this non-violent communication workshop by Lucia Collara for the NL-RSE community!

Everyone is welcome! We also especially like to invite anyone involved in training who might be interested to roll this out in their local institutes in 2027 (come experience it now and let us know if you want to be involved in a train-the-trainer option for next year).

Location: Wonders of Work in Utrecht (next to Hoog Catherijne). Please check the route to the hidden entrance next to the ritual store: Route naar Wonders of Work | Hoog Catharijne Utrecht
Room Sun has space for maximum of 24 people. We want to keep the group size small, to create a safe space. Tickets are free, so be fast to secure your spot!

Program:

9:00 walk-in with coffee & tea

9:30 - 10:00 start of the workshop, introductions

10:00 - 11:00 feedback and active listening

11:00 short biobreak

11:00 - 12:00 non-violent communication

12:00 - 13:00 lunch (included)

Description:

  • Apply Active Listening Techniques
  • Structure Feedback with the NVC Model
  • Separate Observations from Interpretations
  • Integrate Both Frameworks in Real-Time

By integrating evidence-based feedback and active listening science with Nonviolent Communication (NVC) frameworks, participants will develop practical skills to strengthen collaboration and psychological safety.

Drawing from research and field-tested communication strategies, this workshop addresses challenges researchers and research support professionals face when giving and receiving feedback. Whether you're mentoring graduate students, conducting peer review, or collaborating across interdisciplinary teams, these skills will enhance your effectiveness and reduce interpersonal friction.

Participants will engage in hands-on exercises, real-world scenario practice, and reflective dialogue to build confidence in delivering feedback that promotes growth rather than defensiveness. The session balances theoretical grounding with immediate practical application, ensuring you leave with tools you can implement the very next day.
