Enjoy early French cinema brought to life through live music and community dialogue. This cinematic experience, presented in partnership with No Longer Silent, will feature four influential silent films: Georges Méliès’ fantastical Le Voyage dans la Lune, Germaine Dulac’s avant-garde Thèmes et variations, Alice Guy Blaché’s satirical The Consequences of Feminism, and Dimitri Kirsanoff’s poetic Brumes d’automne. Each film will be paired with a newly composed score performed live by local musicians Cash Langdon and Jackie Lo. Following the screenings will be a panel discussion led by Film Scholar and Co-Host of Substrate Radio’s Sleep in Cinema Gareth Jones in conversation with Langdon, Lo, and Catherine Danielou, French Scholar and Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
No Longer Silent is a Birmingham-based film screening series that pairs historic silent films with original live accompaniment from local musicians to create a one-of-a-kind experience. Past programs have been presented at Seasick Records, O’Neal Library, AEIVA, Saturn, and Sidewalk Cinema. Each program concludes with a panel discussion led by local organizations, offering audiences the chance to engage in conversation and reflection inspired by the works on screen.
