We're Discourse BHAM, a pop-up public lecture series bringing the most interesting academic talks to Birmingham's bars & breweries. It's like a college class, but there's drinking.
Tickets are $15. Seating is limited.
Join us for a special director-led screening of Mission Recompense: Love Letters to a Mississippi Delta, a new documentary directed by acclaimed author and filmmaker Erica Sandifer, followed by a live conversation and audience Q&A.
The film traces the deep cultural and historical roots of the Mississippi Delta -- where music, memory, and struggle intertwine -- through the firsthand account of Sylvester Hoover. From the legacy of Emmett Till to the mythology of Robert Johnson, and the enduring impact of the Civil Rights Movement, the documentary brings to life stories that are too often flattened or forgotten and offers an immersive, deeply human perspective on Southern history that lingers well beyond the screen.
The evening begins with Sandifer sharing insights into her creative process, followed by a post-screening discussion where she’ll take questions and engage directly with the audience. Whether you're interested in history, storytelling, or filmmaking, this is a rare chance to experience the work, its creator, and the Delta, up close.
Erica Sandifer is the best-selling, award-winning author of Sunshine in the Delta, a novel beautifully written after the Mississippi Delta. Sunshine in the Delta won the 2018 Black Caucus of the American Library Association eBook Fiction award and has been recognized in many book signings. The book scored number seven on Mississippi's Best-Sellers list, along with John Grisham, in the Clarion Ledger. She is a graduate of Full Sail University, holding a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. Erica was born and raised in Greenwood, Mississippi. She is currently an English Instructor at Miles College.
