Programme

1:00pm Doors open for Meet and chat

2:00pm New Fleet, New Depot, New Era for Tyne and Wear Metro by Michael Richardson (Head of Fleet and Depot Replacement, NEXUS)

An insight into the journey and ‘story so far’ in pursuit of the construction of a brand new state of the art Depot, and the introduction of a new fleet of Metro trains as part of an investment of £362m bringing a transformation in customer experience, including improvements to safety, security and accessibility for our customers, as well as some of the challenges and risks we have had to overcome and manage along the way.

3:30pm A Railway M**der by Karl Cain

When John Nisbet boarded the 10.27 train from Newcastle Central station on Friday the 28th March 1910, he assumed it was just another of his regular, fortnightly journeys taking the workers’ wages to Stobswood colliery near Widdrington. When, however, the train reached its final terminus of Alnmouth station, the porter there made the shocking discovery of a bloodied and lifeless body. The subsequent arrest of John Dickman for theft and M**der not only became a cause celebre in the burgeoning movement arguing for the abolition of capital punishment but also casts light upon the dangers and dilemmas of railway travel in the early part of the twentieth century.
