ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL to Follow July 10, 11, 7:30 PM and July 12, 2:00 PM
About the Festival:
New Plays from the Heartland (NPH) provides Midwest playwrights a chance to share their original plays with residents of Central Illinois in enhanced staged readings. Heartland Theatre Company recruited new, never produced one-act plays from a ten-state region for this playwriting competition. Named for Mike Dobbins, Heartland’s Managing Artistic Director from 1996-2013, the project is funded in part by the Town of Normal Harmon Arts Grant and the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation MIRZA Arts & Culture grant. The project is sponsored and underwritten by Drake Zimmerman and Jan Elfline.
July 10, 11 and 12 Heartland Theatre serves up the three winning plays from its Annual New One-Act Play Festival for a $10.00 donation. Reservations or Tickets are recommended.
Courtney Bailey, Guest Playwright based in St. Louis, will present a one-hour talk on playwriting, free and open to the public on Thursday, July 9 at 7:30 pm. She will also conduct a Master Class with the three winning playwrights, whose plays will be presented July 10, 11 and 12. Bailey was also the final judge on the competition. Bailey will meet invited guests at a Playwrights’ Reception following the opening performance on July 10. The community is welcome. She was also the final adjudicator for the plays, which were judged blind by the committee and Bailey.
Courtney Bailey is a St. Louis-based writer and theatre artist who teaches among the incarcerated and system-impacted communities of Eastern Missouri. The Riverfront Times named her the 2023 Best St. Louis Playwright, and her play Brontë Sister House Party earned the 2022 St. Louis Theatre Circle Award for Best New Play. Most recently, her play The Pavement Kingdom premiered in NYC with Bechdel Project, a non-profit theatre organization that amplifies women's voices. As a playwright and teacher, she prioritizes creating art with incarcerated artists and returning citizens.
