Navigating Special Education: Transition Planning (Free)
About this Event
The transition years decide a lot. This session makes them make sense.
Transition planning is the part of special education that maps what happens after high school: work, college, independent living, adult services. Illinois schools are required to start it by a certain age, and most families never get a clear explanation of what that means or what they can ask for.
Bring your questions. We will walk through it in plain language, with no jargon and no legal background required.
WHAT WE COVER
When transition planning legally has to begin, and what has to be in the plan. How to write transition goals that reflect what your young person actually wants. Agencies and adult services to connect with before graduation, not after. What age of majority changes, and the options besides guardianship. How to keep your young person leading their own meeting.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and self-advocates ages 14 and up. This session is built equally for families and for the young people themselves. Young adults are encouraged to attend and speak for themselves.
WHAT YOU TAKE HOME
Every family and every self-advocate leaves with a personalized Pathways Advocacy Binder. It is yours to keep and use for years, in every meeting you walk into.
ACCESSIBILITY AND BELONGING
This workshop is free. There is no income test, no diagnosis requirement, and no paperwork to bring. Accommodations are available on request.
