Youth Music Project invites families, music lovers, and community members to a hands-on cultural experience: the Native American PVC Flute Workshop, taking place Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 1:00–3:00 PM at Youth Music Project in West Linn. For just $5, participants will have the opportunity to craft, decorate, and learn to play their very own PVC Native American-style flute, while learning about the rich cultural significance of the instrument through storytelling and demonstration. The Native American flute is accessible to all ages and experience levels—no prior musical background is necessary. Kids under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
The workshop is led by Deitz Peters, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, known for his storytelling, craftsmanship, and deep-rooted connection to traditional Native American music and dance. He’ll be joined by Shane Oglesbee, a passionate flute builder whose custom, kid-tested PVC flute design ensures both durability and playability, and Nicholas Emerson, a Youth Music Project instructor and descendant of the Colville Band of the Nez Perce Tribe, who teaches guitar, bass, ukulele, songwriting, and music production.
Participants will:
Learn about the Native American flute’s history and cultural significance
Build and decorate a personal PVC flute
Practice basic flute-playing techniques
Explore the etiquette and experience of a Native flute circle
Space is limited to 25 participants!
