About this Event

The Mysteries to Die For Book Club is led by Elsie Souza, reading M**der, mayhem, and marvelous prose. From Nordic noir to British whodunits, each book reveals how crime and storytelling cross borders, and what our favorite detectives can teach us about culture, justice, and the human heart.
This month, we're reading Helene Tursten's Detective Inspector Huss—a sharp, atmospheric Swedish crime novel introducing Irene Huss, a veteran detective with the Göteborg police. When a wealthy businessman falls to his death from the balcony of his luxury apartment, what initially looks like suicide soon begins to look much more like M**der. Huss and her colleagues are drawn into an investigation that moves from the city's privileged elite into its darker corners, uncovering family secrets, financial dealings, and connections to a violent criminal underworld. Meanwhile, Huss has a life waiting for her beyond the crime scene: a husband, teenage twin daughters, an aging mother, and all the ordinary demands that don't disappear simply because there's a M**der to solve. First published in Sweden in 1998, Detective Inspector Huss helped establish Tursten as a major voice in Scandinavian crime fiction. Smart, unsentimental, and satisfyingly methodical, it's Nordic noir with a detective whose everyday life is nearly as absorbing as the case in front of her.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

One of the most prominent citizens of Göteborg, Sweden, plunges to his death off an apartment balcony, but what appears to be a “society suicide” soon reveals itself to be a carefully plotted M**der. Irene Huss finds herself embroiled in a complex and high-stakes investigation. As Huss and her team begin to uncover the victim’s hidden past, they are dragged into Sweden’s seamy underworld of street gangs, struggling immigrants, and neo-Nazis in order to catch the killer.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Helene Tursten was a nurse and a dentist before she turned to writing. She is the author of the Irene Huss series, including: Detective Inspector Huss, Night Rounds, The Torso, The Glass Devil, The Golden Calf, The Fire Dance, The Beige Man, The Treacherous Net, Who Watcheth, and Protected by the Shadows as well as the Embla Nyström series. Her books have been translated into eighteen languages and made into a television series.
