The Serial Readers Book Club is for stories that take more than one book to tell. Together, we'll make our way through a series from beginning to end, one volume at a time. You don't have to start with us or make it to every meeting—jump in whenever you'd like! This book club is led by the lovely Sammi Snow.
We're continuing Beth Brower's beloved The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, the charming, funny, and thoroughly addictive series told through the journals of an irrepressible young woman making a life for herself in Victorian London. This month, we're reading Volume 7, and seven journals in, the questions are multiplying, the relationships are deepening, and we're more invested in the inhabitants of St. Crispian's than ever.

At this point, Emma's world comes with history. We've accumulated inside jokes, suspicions, favorite characters, unanswered questions, and plenty of opinions about who should—or absolutely should not—be trusted. What began as one young woman's attempt to establish an independent life in London has become a wonderfully tangled web of friendships, family, secrets, and connections.

In Volume 7, Beth Brower continues to reward readers who have been paying attention. Relationships we've watched develop across hundreds of pages continue to shift, seemingly small details invite a second look, and the mysteries threaded throughout Emma's journals leave us wondering just how much we still don't know. And, as always, Emma records it all with the wit, curiosity, stubbornness, and wonderfully singular perspective that made us want to follow her this far in the first place.

We'll talk about the relationships we're most invested in, the characters whose motives we're still questioning, the clues and details we've been collecting along the way, and our latest theories about where Brower might be taking us. We'll also consider one of the great pleasures of serial reading: how knowing a fictional world this well changes the way we notice even its smallest moments.
