The 1st South Carolina Volunteers of African Descent (33rd US Colored Troops) experienced many “firsts” - the first Black Union regiment to be sent into combat, the beginning of continuous Black military service in the US Army, first public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, and many more. Formed more than a year before the famed 54th Massachusetts, the regiment’s storied history encompasses both the Civil War and Reconstruction in South Carolina, alongside the stories of incredible African American figures such as Prince Rivers (co-founder of Aiken County, Susie King Taylor (teacher, nurse, and author) and Henry Hayne (helped integrate USC during Reconstruction).This program has been brought to you by USC Beaufort and the Institute for the Study of the Reconstruction Era (ISRE) and presented by Elizabeth Laney, Research Associate for ISRE
