About the Exhibit

Scott Suchman has long been fascinated by the electrifying colors, boundless kineticism, and humble humanity of markets, traveling around the world to photograph them in North America, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. For this exhibit he traveled to Mumbai, India, in autumn 2025, where he shot at food markets around the sprawling city. Utilizing flash to reveal hidden textures, and embrace the vibrant chromatism of his subjects, he focused on intimate portraits of products and ingredients. He deftly incorporates delicate reminders of the merchants into many of his compositions–a hand gathering a bunch of brilliantly orange marigolds, a pair of scissors left on a mound of dried chilies–deftly etching connections between foodways and those who nourish us.

About the Photographer

Born in New Jersey, Scott Suchman attended the University of Maryland, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television. In 1995, he moved to the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., his home now for more than three decades.

Focusing on food, restaurant, and travel photography, he built an impressive stable of clients, regularly shooting for The Washington Post, The New York Times, Southern Living, Afar, Baltimore Magazine, Food & Wine, and Bon Appetit, as well as a long list of commercial clients. Over the years, he photographed several high-profile cookbooks, including My Irish Table by Cathal Armstrong (Ten Speed Press, 2014), The Sweet Home Cafe Cookbook (Smithsonian Books, 2018), What to Eat When Cookbook (National Geographic Books, 2020), The National Parks Cookbook (National Geographic Books, 2026), and Pizza Practice by Tara Jensen (Chronicle Books, 2026).

While a contributing photographer at Washingtonian, Suchman was part of a writing and visuals team recognized as a semi-finalist for a James Beard Media Award in 2014. His work was included in the AI-AP American Photography Awards in 2021 through 2024, Also in 2024, he received the Best Editorial Food Photography award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
