Dates Part 1-March 23rd,24th & 25th & Part 2- April 20th & 21st
Course Overview
The Moving & Handling and Risk Assessment of People: 5 Day Train the Trainer course is designed for those who wish to provide person-centred and evidence-based moving and handling training within their organisation and equips participants with the necessary skills to effectively assess the competency of their workforce and to carry out moving and handling assessments of the people they provide care for
Expert-Led Instruction
This course is led by a nationally recognised advanced Moving & Handling Specialist who has 24 years of experience in the field, alongside over three decades of working, managing, and inspecting within regulatory services. This extensive background ensures participants benefit from high-quality, real world, practical training and expert guidance, so they can be confident they are learning from a highly trusted professional. In addition, Stuart is a co-contributor to the internationally acclaimed gold standard & person-centred resource, ‘The Handling of People 7th Edition’, and is an advanced member of the National Back Exchange.
Course Structure
This five-day course, structured in accordance with established standards, is pre-arranged into two comprehensive parts to ensure both a thorough understanding of theory and the development of practical skills.
Part 1: Foundations in Theory and Practice (Days 1–3)
The first section spans three days of intensive, interactive learning, immersing participants in the theoretical principles of moving and handling. Key themes include planned & dynamic risk assessment, the use of established assessment tools, biomechanic principles, health and wellbeing, balanced decision-making, and the regulatory context that guides professional practice.
Participants also develop teaching skills, discovering how to deliver material using varied teaching techniques, and learn the value of maintaining clear and accurate documentation throughout the process.
Participants benefit from extensive hands-on practice throughout the course, allowing them to refine and further develop their practical skills under the direct supervision and support of a Moving & Handling Specialist. Each practical session is designed to build confidence and skill, with participants engaging in realistic scenarios that mirror the challenges faced in actual regulatory services. The training is rooted in evidence-based and person-centered principles ensuring that all techniques and approaches prioritise the unique needs and preferences of each person being assisted.
Participants will learn to assess and select appropriate equipment, developing proficiency in safer and more effective techniques—whether working independently or as part of a team. These skills are complemented by a strong emphasis on clear communication, which is essential for maintaining effective outcomes for both the caregiver and the person receiving care. During the course, participants will learn to provide respectful, person-centred care that optimises the abilities of those they assist or assess.
Benefits of the Split Course Format
Dividing the course into two distinct parts brings several advantages for participants. The break between part 1 and part 2 is intentional, giving you valuable time to practise newly acquired skills in a real-world setting.
This interval allows you to build confidence for the assessments conducted on days 4 and 5, ensuring you feel prepared and capable when demonstrating your competency. Additionally, the pause provides an opportunity to prepare your independent theory presentation, which is a key requirement in the second part of the course.
Part 2: Assessment and Qualification (Days 4–5)
The second phase requires participants to return and deliver their own independent theory presentation. In addition, they will undertake a series of practical assessments and case studies, all overseen by the Moving & Handling Specialist. Successful completion leads to formal recognition of competence in both delivering and assessing moving and handling practices.
Upon completion of the course, you will receive a range of valuable resources to enable you to commence training promptly
