Chicago for Chicagoans is thrilled to debut a brand-new 2.5-hour neighborhood walking tour of Morgan Park, led by area resident Cristen Brown! Cristen is a local history enthusiast and architecture obsessive drawn to singing the praises of the unsung, and highlighting the many ways South Siders in particular have managed to make the ordinary extraordinary.
Beginning at the 111th St. Metra Station, the tour will cover the history, architecture, and landmarks of Morgan Park — you'll discover how the area transformed from a remote enclave where 19th century horse thieves would hide their stolen goods, to a quaint commuter suburb built up along the railroads, to a neighborhood divided by the construction of I-57 in the mid-20th century. Since the 1880s, Morgan Park has also been home to a significant number of Black families, who persevered through racially restrictive covenants, the de facto segregation of neighborhood schools, and countless other challenges.
The afternoon will end with a visit to the Ridge Historical Society, where participants are encouraged to join the group to explore the historic mansion and dive deeper into hyper-local Southside history.
