Metal Shop: Metal Forging 101

You will be introduced to the parts of the anvil and how they are used; hammer control for effective movement of metal; the basics of drawing out, tapering and bending; operation of a propane forge, and shop safety. Each student will complete an S hook, if time allows, students may complete more hooks of varying designs.

Class length: 2 to 3 hours

Materials Fee: $10. Please pay instructor at time of class.

Safety equipment to bring:
Safety glasses (mandatory), also recommended over prescription glasses
Ear protection
Leather gloves
Leather apron (optional)

Attire:
Clothing should be cotton or wool. No synthetics like windbreakers or nylon pants.
Leather shoes.
No loose fitting clothing.
Long hair must be tied back.

Instructor

Than King is a professional blacksmith with over ten years experience. His work includes tools and décor for the home and garden with a focus on traditional blacksmithing techniques. His art is inspired by the beauty of nature and the natural world around us. His work has been shown in galleries and he has sold products throughout the country and internationally. He is an active member with the California Blacksmith Association (CBA). He is a certified instructor through the CBA, he frequently instructs and demonstrates at CBA events across the state. Than has a passion for teaching and believes in the moral obligation of passing on the craft of blacksmithing to ensure its survival.
