About this Event
To celebrate the festive period, we've teamed up with Distant Hill Brewery in Old Glossop for a Christmas hike and feast! Led by Emily from Peak Outdoor Coaching, this walk takes us on a beautiful 14km (approx) hike* to explore the beautiful valley of Glossop and its surrounding hills. On our return, we'll be treated with a well-deserved cheese and meat feast** in Distant Hills' private dining area, which will be suitably dressed up for Christmas and should really get us into the spirit of the season!
If you're planning on making a weekend of it, the Old Glossop Christmas Markets will be here on Sunday 1st December. There are some great places to stay in Glossop so let me know if you would like some recommendations.
Distance: 8.5 miles/14km
Level: Easy/Moderate/Challenging: some uneven ground that may be slippery. Some hill walking experience would be preferred.
Elevation: 550m
Time: 4.5-5.5 hours
*The route we hike will depend on the weather on the day. The stats above are for Plan A. If the weather or ground conditions are deemed unsafe, a lower level walk of a similar distance will be our Plan B. Either option will result in a lovely day out!
**Vegan options available. Drinks not included.
Who will be your guide?
I’m Emily, founder of Peak Outdoor Coaching and I’m a Hill and Moorland Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!
Transport:
We will be meeting at Distant Hills Brewery, Hawkshead Mill, Hope St, Glossop SK13 7SS (Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gBN3hHrTdfc7sXzz7 ) where there is a small car park as well as some roadside parking.
There is also a car park a 5 minute walk away facing The Wheatsheaf Pub.
Meeting at 8.45am to set off at 9am.
What to bring:
Hiking boots/trainers with good grip
Snacks/lunch (save yourself for the feast!)
Rucksack
Water (at least 1L)
Waterproofs
Warm layers
Hat and gloves
Walking poles (optional)
A small first aid kit with any personal medications
Terrain:
Mostly trails and footpaths, some with uneven ground. Expect mud this time of year. Some stiles on route.
Toilets:
There are toilets at Distant Hills, but these may not be open at the start. There are toilets on route.
Safety:
The whole point of the walk is to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone so we will keep to a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let me know your concerns. Please inform me of any medical conditions prior to the walk.
I am a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and I am level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.
Dogs:
Dogs are more than welcome to come along, however, there will be livestock around and potentially other dogs, so they will need to stay on a lead for parts of it. There are stiles on this route.
Refund Policy:
Refunds will only be given if the event is cancelled. If you can no longer attend you are more than welcome to sell your ticket to someone else but please let me know if you do so. I cannot be responsible for selling your ticket on.
And FINALLY:
This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless I deem the conditions dangerous so be ready to embrace the good old British weather! If I do have to cancel the walk for safety reasons, I will suggest one more date for the walk to be rearranged or you can redeem your ticket on one other walk on a date suitable to you.
