This walk is for my sister, Michelle — a woman of strength, love, and quiet courage — who we lost last year. Every step I take will be in her memory, and every penny raised will go to support the vital work of the MNDA.Michelle’s story is one of devotion. Her husband, Gordon, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2016. Just 18 months later, we lost him. In that short, devastating time, Michelle was not only his wife — she became his full-time carer, his strength, and his unwavering support.
Gordon was a proud man, but this cruel disease strips away more than physical ability — it takes away independence, dignity, and the simplest parts of everyday life. Tasks most of us take for granted — getting dressed, fastening buttons, tying shoelaces — become impossible. Even the most personal moments require help. In addition, while the person living with MNDA suffers greatly, so too does the carer, often quietly, often unseen.
This is why I am walking.
I know I cannot change the world. However, if the money we raise can make life even a little easier for just one person living with MNDA, or offer support to one carer facing this journey, then every step will have been worth it.
The walk will begin at 10pm on Thursday 14th May. Over the next 18 hours, I will walk at least 20 laps of Stanley Park. Friends will be joining along the way — and everyone is welcome. Whether you walk one lap or many, your presence will mean the world.
For those who cannot take part in the full walk, I invite you to join us for the final lap. We will gather at the Golf Club at 3.45pm and walk together down North Park Drive to the Cricket Club arriving at 4pm. There, we will raise a glass to Michelle and Gordon — two incredible people who will never be forgotten.
Later that evening, we will continue fundraising with a raffle and auction, hoping to raise even more for this important cause.
