Did you know that Oregon has 5 marine reserves? Come learn about Oregon’s marine reserves, areas of no harvest that serve as living laboratories for our nearshore environment. Each of these areas is unique, they are different shapes and sizes and hold distinct habitats and biological characteristics. Get quizzed on your knowledge of Oregons nearshore environments, coastal geography and oceanography, and regulations around them, all while competing for some rad prizes. You are bound to learn a lot.
Oregon’s system of marine reserves and protected areas is an investment in the health and future of its ocean.
A decade ago, the state of Oregon recognized the importance of studying and protecting our dynamic coasts, and designated our Marine Reserves and Marine Protected Areas. Marine reserves and protected areas have been created around the world to achieve different goals. The purpose and goals of Oregon’s marine reserves are to conserve marine habitats and biodiversity, provide a framework for scientific research and effectiveness monitoring; and avoid significant adverse social and economic impacts on ocean users and coastal communities.
