About this Event
Step into Newport’s living Blue Line- "A Coastal Field Trip with Snacks” — the flow of ocean water, seafood, knowledge, and culture that sustains our coast. On February 7, explore behind-the-scenes spaces, meet scientists and fishers, taste ocean-inspired foods, and experience how seawater, research, and community all connect.
This is a self-guided, choose-your-route adventure across the following venues:
Hatfield Marine Science Center
Oregon Coast Aquarium
Port of Newport & Pacific Maritime Heritage Center
Yaquina Lab & Central Coast Food Web.
Closer to the time of the event more details including a map and detailed description of each stop on the trip will be emailed to the ticket holder.
What You’ll Experience
- Science in Action: Meet researchers, educators, and aquarists who work daily with seawater systems and marine life.
- Working Waterfront: Talk with fishers and harbor partners through our Dock Walks and Dockside Dialogues. Maybe see crab unloading from the boats to the dock!
- Blue Foods: Watch an expert fillet a fish from nose to tail, taste seafood samples and Blue Pantry creations, sip Local Ocean Seafoods new Fish Bone Broths and learn about local sourcing while explore CCFW’s food hub.
- Seawater Journeys: Discover how seawater moves through research labs, hatcheries, and food systems along Newport’s coast. Tour the Yaquina Lab’s OoNee Sea Urchin Ranch and Seaweed Farm.
- Connection & Community: Drive the route at your own pace — each stop offers something unique. Carpooling encouraged!

Hatfield Marine Science Center
Info: Heartbeat Sensor Board Demo- Explore shellfish physiology through real-time heartbeat visualizations from crabs, oysters, mussels, and more. Compare responses in warm vs. cold or high vs. low oxygen conditions to see how seasonal upwelling shapes metabolism.
HMSC Visitor Center admission required (details forthcoming).
See oysters at work filtering water and learn how environmental conditions influence flow, clarity, and husbandry—directly connecting to Oregon’s mariculture sector.
Outdoor demo. No admission required.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
Info: Beautiful marine habitats and science exhibits highlight Oregon's marine reserve and kelp ecosystems. Access is to classroom only - aquarium admission not included. A voucher provided for $5 admission to the whole aquarium facility on Sunday Feb. 8th.
Port of Newport
Info: Working waterfront highlights include Docks Walks with harbor partners such as Oregon Sea Grant, and free access to the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center with a Fisher Speaks program in the Theater in the afternoon (time TBD). Lounge on the Line at some of our favorite snack stops, like Local Ocean and others- offering special bits and drinks for the day.
Yaquina Lab / Central Coast Food Web
Info: CCFW’s food hub in action with tours of the Seawater Complex, including urchin ranching and seaweed mariculture. Blue foods cooking demos, fish bone broth sampling, and fish filleting demos. Redeem your $5 ticket at our pop-up shop, record a short video in our story telling booth. a Updates to the full agenda will be provided a couple of weeks prior to the event.
