MARA: Oromo Knowledge Making Exhibition

Join us for the opening reception of a community exhibition exploring four decades of Oromo intellectual, cultural, and ritual life in the diaspora.

The exhibit is free and open August 1–16, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Weekends, 1–6 PM.

Mara: 40 Years of Oromo Knowledge Making is an exhibition honoring Indigenous Oromo knowledge and the many ways communities have built, carried, and remade knowledge across generations.

It presents journals created by exiled students and activists, recorded testimonials on women's ritual knowledge, the work of artist and civil rights activist Haaccaaluu Hundeessaa and art by Twin Cities artists Agartuu Inor, Lokho Kotile, Murata Wolldeyohannes.

Mara is curated by Oromo archivist and researcher Ayantu Tibeso, archivist and artist, Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski, and designer and illustrator Matshoshi Matsufu. It is presented at Soomaal House of Art, an artist-led collective, arts organization and gallery in Minneapolis.

This exhibition is made possible by the African Studies Initiative at the University of Minnesota. The opening celebration is sponsored by the Center of Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender and Sexual Studies (RIDGS) and the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota.
