Manchester Airport - Terminal 2 Reconfiguration
About this Event
Manchester Airport is the UK's largest airport outside London – an international gateway for the North of England. A £1.3 billion, decade-long transformation programme has increased its capacity from 25M to 35M passengers a year. Manchester Airport's Terminal 2 is the centrepiece of a transformation programme that has increased passenger handling capacity, strengthened security, cut security clearance and transit times, and improved the quality of retail and hospitality. The Terminal 2 Reconfiguration is the focus which involved reconfiguring the existing Terminal 2 building, opened in the 1990s, and integrating it with an extension completed in 2021.
The building structure underwent a number of major interventions and shows the importance of early investigations and surveys to uncover the as built condition and maximise its effectiveness to drive sustainable design. The complete structural achieves an A+ SCORS rating and has already won the NCE Airport Expansion Award. All of this was completed in a building still open to passengers with all internal steelwork brought in without any cranes.
The presentation will be delivered by Buro Happold structural engineers, some of which have worked on the Manchester Airport project over the last decade and will be joined by McCrory Group who were the Superstructure Contractor.
