About this Event

Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture present Making & Remembering: A Symposium to accompany Grounded in Grain, Washed in the Water. Artists Derrick Beasley, Maya Freelon, and christa david will give short artist talks about their work in the exhibition. They will then convene with curator Lauren Jackson Harris on a panel discussing themes in the show.

After a break for lunch, we’ll dive into sessions with guest speakers, including a screening of High Water, directed by Tyquan Morton, followed by a short Q&A lead by A$iahMae, Charleston’s Poet Laureate, as well as panel discussion about collecting Black art, moderated by Arun Drummond.
