About this Event

University of Southern Maine students explore the city’s social, cultural, and physical landscapes recorded in the Osher Map Library’s collection of historical maps through the lens of contemporary digital mapping technologies (GIS).

Discuss the project with students and faculty involved in this work. Add your personal memories and experiences of Portland and Maine to this work. Share your stories, pictures, and aspirations through our social mapping platform.

Friday, May 1, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Free to the public.


ABOUT THE PARTNERS

interdisciplinary program at the emphasizes the integration of the two disciplines and the common interests in examining the relationship between human populations and their natural and built environments.

Founded in the spirit of lifelong learning and a deep commitment to our communities, the and Smith Center for Cartographic Education at the University of Southern Maine enables free public access to and engagement with five centuries of cartographic materials via University, K-12, and public educational outreach; the preservation and digitization of our collections; gallery exhibitions; research and scholarship; and public programming that collectively promotes the continued relevance of maps and mapping as tools to help patrons understand the past and the present, and to imagine the future.

is a web-based app that uses GIS technology to assist users in identifying Indigenous Nations, territories, and Indigenous communities across Canada. The app can be used for learning about the territory your home or business is situated on, finding information for a land acknowledgement, and learning about the treaties and agreements signed across Canada.

The Greater Portland Metro’s Congress & Casco Street Stop is directly in front of our building, served by routes 1, 7, 8, and 9B.
