About this Event

The Mill District Local Art Gallery is pleased to announce its newest Front Window Gallery Installation. J. Loomis.

Please join us at our Opening Reception on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 5-7pm. Reception RSVP encouraged.

This exhibit runs from January 9 through April 27, 2026.

Exhibit Details:

Mabel Loomis Todd (1856-1932) left an unmistakable imprint on the Town of Amherst through her inexhaustible energy and abundant artistic, literary, and civic organizing talents.

Now chiefly remembered as the editor of the first posthumous collections of Emily Dickinson’s poetry, Todd also wrote and published a novel, travel memoirs, popular works on astronomy, and volumes of her own poetry.

She led the establishment of a number of community institutions including the Amherst Historical Society, the Mary Mattoon chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Amherst Woman’s Club as well as other local and regional clubs related to writing, theater, and music.

Eighteen paintings and the manuscript of “A Sunset Idyl and Other Poems” by E. J. Loomis are also the subject of a 2026 exhibit at the Emily Dickinson Museum.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of post card prints of her paintings exhibited at The Mill District Local Art Gallery benefit the Museum. To learn more about Mabel Loomis Todd, please visit the Emily Dickinson Museum on Main Street or online at www.EmilyDickinsonMuseum.org.

The Mill District Local Art Gallery is donating space and sales commission to support this cause.

comprises two historic houses in the center of Amherst, Massachusetts associated with the poet Emily Dickinson and members of her family during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Homestead was the birthplace and home of the poet Emily Dickinson. The Evergreens, next door, was home to her brother Austin, his wife Susan, and their three children.

The Museum was created in 2003 when the two houses merged under the ownership of Amherst College. Its mission is to spark the imagination by amplifying Emily Dickinson’s revolutionary poetic voice from the place she called home.

In just a few short years the Emily Dickinson Museum has established a vibrant presence and ambitious program for encouraging a broad appreciation for this remarkable poet’s unparalleled work.
