Highlights from the History of Lampworking

Beth Hylen was a reference librarian at The Rakow Research Library of The Corning Museum of Glass, where she helped researchers, students and artists find information about the art and history of glass.

Today, Beth creates wearable sculpture using glass, silver and mixed media. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries nationally and is featured in publications.

She also investigates the history of lampworking. Articles by Beth have appeared in The Flow, Fusion, GASnews, Behind the Glass, and other glass-related publications. She was awarded the Lifetime Membership Award by the Glass Art Society in 2024.

1:15pm Patrick Deflorio – Yankee Glassblower https://yankeeglassblower.com/Tooling fixture for Litton U lathe.
Patrick received his Associate's degree in manufacturing from Wentworth Institute in 1982 and worked with his father until William's death in 2008. He now runs the shop using his father's tools, techniques, and teachings. Patrick is our primary fabricator and is responsible for overseeing all of the projects in the shop. Patrick has been a member of the American Scientific Glassblower's Society since 1984 and was a member of the British Scientific Glassblowers' Society since 2002. He has won multiple awards from both the ASGS and the BSSG for technical demonstrations and articles published on the subjects of glassblowing and glassblowing safety. He served as president of the ASGS for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Presently he serves as the Northeast Section Secretary.

A second-generation glassblower, Preston began flameworking at a young age under his father’s watchful eye. From there he has continued to refine his skills as a scientific glassblower, working with researchers at Yale University.

Sally Prasch began working with glass in 1970 under Lloyd Moore. BFA from the University of Kansas and degree in Applied Science and Scientific Glass Technology from Salem Community College. Active with the ASGS regional sections and nationally organized symposia in Saratoga, Princeton, and Corning. Presented posters, papers, seminars, workshops and papers for the ASGS. Recipient of the ASGS Helmut E. Drechsel Achievement Award and Salem Community College’s Award of Excellence. Sally teaches glass internationally, currently the scientific glassblower and instructor at UMass Amherst and artistic glassworker at Prasch Glass
