Join certified beach naturalists for a whopping -3.1 low tide to explore the intertidal zone!
About this Event

Join IslandWood educators and certified Bainbridge Beach Naturalists for a beach exploration as we hunt for sea stars, sea cucumbers, urchins, marine worms and other unique creatures of the intertidal zone.

At this great low -3.1 tide, we’ll get a close-up look at critters and hidey-holes rarely visible on this stretch of shoreline. Beach naturalists will be on hand to guide participants in identification and model respectful techniques for interacting with beach wildlife as we practice being responsible beach stewards while having fun in the sun!

Thank you for pre-registering so we can ensure we have enough volunteer beach naturalists out there with you. There is no charge for this off-site event, however donations are appreciated, which you can make online.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • This event is rain or shine!
  • Families are welcome!
  • Please note the location of this event is at the Point White Pier (Dock) on Bainbridge Island.
  • There is a public parking lot across from the pier, there is limited pull-off parking on the side of Crystal Springs Drive right near the pier.
  • There is NO street parking on Crystal Springs Drive (no shoulder at all).
  • Participants at this event will be engaging in field-study, which will include walking on uneven terrain, slippery rocks, getting hands wet, and body motions such as bending, kneeling and squatting on the ground to see the creatures along the shoreline.
  • While this is a public beach, we recommend not bringing your dog, even leashed, due to the fragility of the creatures exposed at this extreme low tide. Dogs are naturally curious about wildlife, so it is important we are good stewards of our shoreline environments.
  • ADA-defined ervice animals are welcome.
  • Please wear rubber boots, and if you must wear sandals, please make sure they are close-toed, versus the thong kind.
  • Don't forget your sunscreen, bring a reusable water bottle, and your favorite marine life field guide - of course, we'll have several to share!

This event is made possible in partnership with our friends at the Bainbridge Beach Naturalists, a program of Sustainable Bainbridge and the WSU Extension Water Stewardship Program.
Special thanks to The Fletcher Bay Foundation for supporting our free and low-cost community events.
