About this Event
Book club discussion - The Fellowship of the Ring, finishing the book
Short summary
Last session we had 13 people in the room - our slightly overstaffed Vancouver Fellowship.
This time the book finally earns the word "fellowship." And then starts breaking it.
This is the stretch people remember for the big reasons: Rivendell, the Council, Moria, Lothlórien, the river, the ending. But what makes it worth discussing is the pressure. The mission stops feeling picturesque and starts costing people something.
Advice gets messy. Courage gets uneven. The Ring stops being an object and starts behaving like a force inside the group.
If you've only known the movies, the book version of this stretch is slower, stranger, more spiritually tense, and less interested in making anybody look cool.
**Reading for this session (**We're finishing The Fellowship of the Ring.)
Depending on your edition, Book II may restart the chapter numbers. Read:
Flight to the Ford
Many Meetings
The Council of Elrond
The Ring Goes South
A Journey in the Dark
The Bridge of Khazad-dûm
Lothlórien
The Mirror of Galadriel
Farewell to Lórien
The Great River
The Breaking of the Fellowship
Yes, it's a bigger stretch this time. You do get Moria.
A few questions already sitting in my head
"Was the Council of Elrond wise - or just the most dignified chaos meeting in fantasy?"
"At what point does the mission stop feeling noble and start feeling cruel?"
"Why does Moria still hit harder than half of modern fantasy's dark scenes?"
"Did Galadriel feel comforting, dangerous, or like someone who sees too much to be easy company?"
"What actually breaks the Fellowship: Boromir, the Ring, bad luck, or the fact that this mission was never going to be carried equally?"
"By the end, who feels strongest to you - and who feels most human?"
Going forward, If you like, bring one question with you that you want to ask the room. (I will bring questions but I want to give some time to questions others want to ask the room)
