Loose Gravel, Snowbird Street Band join McDaniel Band

The McDaniel Band returns to the Varsity for another performance on Saturday, July 25, at 7 p.m. in the Balcony. The band will be joined by Loose Gravel and the Snowbirds with Stumpy Joe on bass for this Down Home Cookin' Live at the Varsity concert.
The McDaniel Band play blues, rockabilly, swing, country and jazz as well as Kent McDaniel’s originals. In addition to Kent on guitar and vocals, band members include Dorothy McDaniel on bass, flute, and vocals; and Charlie Morrill on kit drums.
Loose Gravel is a fun-loving group of six women who formed the band in 1998. Their sets mix originals and cover tunes, blues, boogie, and folk, with a splash of jazz and funk. They play a wide variety of instruments from banjo to bassoon, mandolin to harmonica, and kazoo to Hulusi, all accompanied by solid bass, drums, keyboard, and guitar. Members are Cindy Clark, Maria Johnson, Jayme McCarroll, Darlene DuFay, Sheila Simon, and Kynda Killoran.
Betsy Brink and Cody Dawkins are the Snowbird Street Band, featuring Betsy on acoustic guitar, Cody on banjo, and both on vocals. The two met in Alaska, and soon migrated to Key West, and a couple of years ago moved to Southern Illinois, Cody's home. Their sound is described as folk-rock meets bluegrass. Stumpy Joe accompanies on bass. Stumpy Joe (Joe Sweckard) is a singer, songwriter, and instrument builder from Central Illinois. He began his career working as a union ironworker out of Local 112 in Peoria. He later transitioned into a professional musician and became the CEO of the Five Pound Bass Co., crafting unique instruments like his signature one-string canoe paddle bass.

The Varsity Bar and doors open at 6; the show starts at 7. Tickets are $12 in advance here at Eventbrite and at the door on the night of the show.
